Trying Something New: How to Make Your First Step Into a New Exercise Less Scary

It's a New Year, and whilst that can come with an unnecessary amount of pressure, it also presents the opportunity to press reset and level up. It's a natural time for reflection, setting goals, and new things.

One of the biggest goals we've come across in January for women, is that they want to move more.

Remember PE at high school, and 90's diet culture, there's a reason why exercise has had a bad rep for so many years. You want to do something, you aren't sure of what you like because you haven't tried different things, and you maybe don't know where to start...... enter AJ Activewear.
Here's our guide to starting something new for 2025.

1. Do a Little Research

Before you throw yourself at something, spend a bit of time understanding what to expect. Look up descriptions, watch beginner-friendly videos online, or read reviews. Knowing what’s you're signing up for is key to you not getting an unwelcome surprise.

2. Bring a Friend

There's normally safety in numbers, and a new experience is no different.. They’ll provide support, share the experience, and make that first less intimidating. If you have fun, this is more likely to make you go back, and is potentially your new mate date for 2025.

3. Dress the Part

This part is the game changer, and the reason we started AJ Activewear. We know that once you've been active, those little endorphins kick in, and you start to feel great. We use our fits to create that feeling BEFORE you've even worked out. Wear something that makes you strut the moment you put it on.

4. Start Small

Most people stop before they've even got started, because the goal seems so far away. they focus on the goal rather than the process. Start small and increase until you are in  a comfortable routine with balance.

5. Be Open to Mistakes

It’s okay to not get everything right the first time. Everyone was a beginner once, and nobody’s judging you. In fact, most people will admire your courage for trying something new.

6. Focus on How You Feel, Not How You Look

A big part of enjoying exercise is tuning into how it makes your body and mind feel. Whether it’s the sense of accomplishment, the endorphin rush, or the relaxation afterwards, these feelings are what matter most.

7. Reward Yourself Afterwards

Give yourself something to look forward to after your session. Whether it’s a hot coffee, a relaxing bath, or even just the satisfaction of ticking it off your list, celebrating small wins keeps the experience positive.

8. Remind Yourself Why You’re Doing This

Maybe it’s about building confidence, finding joy in movement, or challenging yourself in a new way. Keeping your personal goals in mind can help you push past any initial nerves.

9. Music

There's nothing like a good playlist to get you through a workout. Solo workouts such as a run, or a gym workout are made easier, and go faster when you've got some great tunes lined up. We're in to the 90's vibe right now, and just happen to have prepared this playlist... You are welcome!

10. JUST START

There's never a perfect moment. It's time to just take the leap.

What do we do??

As a team, our active lives look so different from each other... but what does that look like?

Claire - Claire loves to lift weights. She's part of an all female group training programme who train 3 mornings a week, and does a separate PT session. Claire also does the occasional Park Run, plus daily steps with her hyper spaniel, Molly.

Deb - Deb does a mixture of a set programme where she works with a PT remotely, and she does online Body Balance with her Husband on an evening. She's also a dedicated dog walker, and clocks up her steps with Woody.

Laura - Laura plays hockey and LOVES IT. She's part of a women's hockey team. She also has started getting in to the gym after working out with weights from home in 2024. She's also got 3 children so spends a lot of time rushing around with them.

Melanie - Melanie loves classes. Pump, and Yoga are her favourites. She uses her local facilities which are part of a group so her membership allows her to try different classes with different instructors, at a number of locations.

Isla -Isla is the spin queen. She teaches it weekly, and you'll find her on the bike, next to her sister, on a themed ride multiple times a week. Isla is just about to start training for the Great North Run, and is looking at ways to motivate herself for this journey.
